Brand milestones
American Tourister is one of the leading luggage brands in the world with a presence in more than 120 countries worldwide.
Our journey started in 1933, when founder Sol Koffler put his life savings on the line to start a luggage company in Providence, Rhode Island (USA). His dream: to create a hard-wearing suitcase that was affordable for everyone.
Air travel was taking off and lighter luggage was in high demand. We introduced the lightweight HI-Taper luggage for world travellers, which was packed with extra features to make their journeys easier.
The 50s found us experimenting with cutting-edge materials to develop the world’s first moulded luggage, in a recognizable modern design, which was able to withstand the toughest of treatment.
When international travel soared in the 60s, we were the first company to ‘flight test’ our luggage with cabin crew from major airlines.
We launched the Gorilla advertising campaign. This world-famous, long-running commercial featured a gorilla beating the hell out of a piece of luggage in a zoo cage. He never could destroy that thing!
Two of the world's greatest luggage brands come together.

We teamed up with Disney to create suitcases featuring fan favourite Disney & MARVEL characters.

More than just a stunning contemporary design – it was our lightest hardside suitcase yet – with the large Spinner weighing in at only 3.2 kg.
Understanding the need for change and commitment to protect our planet, we focused our efforts towards producing more sustainable luggage, with a unique material made from recycled PET bottles called RecyclexTM. This fabric can be used to make both inner lining and outer suitcase & bags fabric.
The 1.000.000th SoundBox was sold in Europe, securing its position as a travel fan favourite. Have you spotted one on your adventures?
We turned 90!
Yep, we’re older than we look but still pursuing our vision to develop high quality luggage affordable to everyone – just as our founder wanted.
